A word from our first program: Public Spaces Community Places

Katharine Czarnecki, former Senior Vice President of Community Development at the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), talks about how the MEDC changed the way they delivered tools to local communities, through crowdgranting, and had one quarter of the population donate to a campaign in rural Portland, Michigan.

    Building Vibrant Communities Across Michigan

Thriving places help define a community’s economic vitality–from bike trails and pocket parks to public sculpture projects, they contribute to a strong quality of life, help attract and retain talent, and grow stronger local economies.

Public Spaces Community Places is a powerful crowdgranting program and public placemaking initiative that builds vibrant communities across Michigan. Created by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation in 2014 in collaboration with the Michigan Municipal League and Patronicity, PSCP was the first program of its kind in the country. Through PSCP, local residents can use crowdfunding as part of the development of placemaking projects in their communities and receive a matching grant of up to $50,000 from the MEDC.

In 2016, the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority, in partnership with Patronicity, developed CreatINg Places, a place-based crowdgranting program. Empowering Small Business

The Biz-M-Power crowdgranting program, a partnership with Massachusetts Growth Capital Corporation (MGCC), offers small businesses in Massachusetts financial assistance with their acquisition, expansion, improvement or lease of a facility, purchase or capital lease of equipment, or with meeting other capital needs for the business. Eligible businesses are empowered to advance their business with an innovative approach to obtaining capital.

Small businesses that receive approval from MGCC launch a crowdfunding campaign to support the specific needs of their business. Small businesses that reach their goal by rallying support from their community receive a matching grant award from MGCC. MGCC has awarded matching grants to small businesses ranging from $1,500 to $40,000 over the lifetime of the program.
