Some of the 2018 Rutherford Pool highlights are:
The Ypsilanti Community is rich in diversity and if you have ever spent an afternoon at the pool, you would know that it serves our entire community, across the socioeconomic, ethnic, and age spectrums. This is an accomplishment that we should all celebrate!
Now after 47 years of this wonderful resource providing great service to the community, it needs our help.
If you have visited the pool you have seen our aging and worn bathhouse. What you have likely noticed are the cracked walls and floors, peeling paint and poor lighting. But what you do not see is the failing plumbing, heating and cooling and outdated electrical and mechanical systems.
Through the tireless effort of pool employees and volunteers the bathhouse has been “patched” together year after year for over a decade and the time to address these issues is now.
On January 7, 2019 a two year Renovate the Bathhouse [W1] [JG2] community fundraising campaign will be initiated by the Friends of Rutherford Pool Board, in collaboration with the Renovate the Bathhouse Campaign Committee.
To begin this process, in the fall of 2016, the pool board held a community meeting to discuss the ideas to include in a newly renovated bathhouse. The discussion was thoughtful and wide-ranging, giving the board a blueprint for a future renovation. Some of the topics discussed at the town hall included: improved lighting, seating and locker space, installation of solar power, the addition of gender neutral and family changing rooms and installing an outdoor concrete ping pong table.
The board's priority is to keep the community input in the forefront of our decisions, while addressing the bathhouse’s significant structural and mechanical issues. We believe that both missions have been accomplished!
With our help through this campaign we will be able to complete the following:

We had a great start to the renovation project, which was interrupted by the pandemic lockdown.
Construction bids for the bath house renovation came in at the end of September and the City will be contracting with Phoenix Construction to do the renovation. A contract is currently being drafted and it is anticipated that it will be approved by Ypsilanti City Council on November 5th.
On Saturday over 20 volunteers came to the Rutherford Pool bath house to clear it out for the renovation project and it is ready for the work to begin!
The City and Friends of Rutherford Pool completed the request for bid and it is now being circulated for proposals.
The bid is open until August 22 and contractors interested in reviewing can go to

A 3-D schematic is attached for the new plan.
Architect David Esau, Cornerstone Design, works with Rutherford Pool staff and Board to complete a final schematic of new bathhouse redesign. Architectural plans currently in process.
RFP being drafted to use for construction bidding.
Friends of Rutherford Pool board members met with Ypsilanti City staff on April 15 to draft a timeline for completing architectural plans, putting them out to bid, and hiring a builder to begin the project.
The current plan is to post the plans by mid July, with contractors having one month to make bids.
It is planned for Ypsilanti City Council to approve the selected bid by September 10, with contract negotiations to start shortly thereafter.
On March 7th the Rutherford Pool Board voted to officially engage architectural services of David Esau of Cornerstone Design,
Following the hiring, a Board sub-committee and staff of Rutherford Pool reviewed several preliminary designs. These were narrowed down and a final design is being completed shortly.
